Info about conference, weather, and more!

Conference is THIS week! We cannot wait to see you in Greenville.

A reminder about weather -

On Wednesday, those of you joining us for pre-conference and the Exhibit Hall Grand Opening/All Conference Reception will enjoy some warm spring weather with an unseasonable high near 80. Those of you making digital field trips at the zoo and the downtown Mice on Main search will have beautiful weather – just wear some sunscreen!

Thursday and Friday are supposed to be rainy with a significant drop in temperature – Thursday’s high is supposed to be in the upper 50’s and Friday its only supposed to be in the mid 40’s!

Convention Center Notes -

The Carolina First Center is going “green” – you will note several special “composting” and recycling trash cans around the center. All paper products are compostable and the center asks that they go in the correct bins so that they can be recycled. Disposable cups in the center are actually made of a corn starch material that will easily breakdown after use. Yay “green!”  We will have water service during the day and there are vending machines near the entrance of the exhibit hall for other drinks.

There is wireless internet access available free throughout the center – bring your laptops and “experience” the digital journey at conference!

Remember that the Carolina First Center has been remodeled – you will be coming in the “new” front entrance which is around what used to be the “back” of the facility. There is ample free parking for all, and you don’t have to cross the street like you did before! That parking lot is still there with 280 parking spaces, so if you want to park there, you still can.  : )

Just remember to turn off of Pleasantburg Drive at the light by the Krispy Kreme (who gave us free coupons for a doughnut for everyone!!) and you’ll be there!

A reminder about ALL DAY Preconferences-

Please remember that the ALL DAY preconferences start at 9:00AM on Wednesday. This is earlier than the other pre-conferences to allow for trolley travel time. You’ll come in to the conference center and meet with your presenters/guides and go over the schedule for the day, then the Greenville trolleys will be picking you up to leave for your destination (zoo or downtown) by 9:30AM. You will return to the center for lunch and an afternoon session where you’ll start creating a virtual field trip from your morning’s activities. You’ll be working on laptops in the afternoon and I STRONGLY recommend bringing a flash drive or CD to save your work to, unless you are planning on bringing your own laptops for the session. We will have digital still cameras, Flip cameras and GPS for you to work with, but if you have your own and prefer to use it, bring it along!

Conference Update!

Conference Update -

The 2009 SCASL conference is just around the corner!

I know a lot of you have expressed concerns about attendance and what we can do for our members that can’t be with us this year. It is hard to say until we get there, but you’ll most likely see about 50-60% of the regular crowd we have.

Now, I have a firm belief that librarians can be some of the most creative and flexible professionals in the educational world, and I know everyone is working hard to be creative and flexible in order to keep your library programs going strong despite the economic downturn. Please rest assured that the SCASL steering committee and executive board are doing the same thing – everyone is working hard to be creative in trimming costs and seeking sponsors to make sure that you will still have the fabulous program that you’ve come to expect from SCASL despite the difficult times we are facing. We’re also in the process of trying to find creative ways to include our members that are not going to be able to be with us this year. We do hope to stream a few sessions this year and I hope we will continue to expand our virtual professional development opportunities in the future. Keep an eye out for news from the IT Committee on webinars and online opportunities to come!  As soon as det!
ails are ironed out and we have a firm plan for how we can expand the “walls” of conference to include our missing friends, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, keep those suggestions coming!

For those who are able to attend this year: I think you’re going to love the newly renovated Carolina First Center (Formerly the Palmetto Expo Center)! There is a new entrance – for those of you who have been to the convention center before, the new entrance is in the “back” with ample free parking for all. You can’t miss the turn, the red Krispy Kreme light will show the way! : )
We’ve gotten some incredible sponsors for goodies for your conference bags – be on the lookout for your free coupons for doughnuts, coffee, biscuits and more!

Also, ABDO will be having their Friday morning breakfast again this year! Come by the Watson Library Services booth to sign up for this FREE breakfast opportunity!!
