ELA Standards – let’s help!

Urgent – Please respond to jboltjes@lexington1.net as soon as possible

I would like to challenge each of you to think of at least one book you
have read that would address one of the ELA indicators. The standards
are official now
(http://ed.sc.gov/agency/Standards-and-Learning/Academic-Standards/old/cso/standards/ela/documents/ELAStandards2008.pdf)

The wiki page has been redone to match the revised standards.

We can be helpful to each other and our English teacher friends by
addressing these indicators with suggestions for books to reinforce the
standards and indicators. There are “Standards Support Documents” in
varying stages of completion. Links to the support documents are at
http://ed.sc.gov/agency/Standards-and-Learning/Academic-Standards/old/cso/standards/ela/index.html

Each of these documents will contain this passage similar to this one:

Student Texts
There are many titles that teachers and students may select to better
understand drawing conclusions and making inferences. Library Media
Specialists from the South Carolina Association of School Librarians
(SCASL) are collaborating with the South Carolina Department of
Education
to provide a sampling of texts to match the indicators. This
will continue to be a work in progress. Teachers should collaborate with
their library media specialists for additional suggestions. These titles
can be used for read alouds, shared reading, and independent reading.
While each title on the list has been read and reviewed by
professionals, some of these titles may not meet the needs of each
classroom environment. Teachers are encouraged to read the texts prior
to using them in class. Use the following link for the SCASL suggested
texts: http://scasl.pbwiki.com/ELA%20Standards.

Right now there are very few titles that have been suggested. To enhance
our reputation with other professionals looking at this document we need
to provide a wonderful variety! Please take a few minutes and send one or more
suggestions to me to post on the wiki. (jboltjes@lexington1.net)

I need the following information:
ELA indicator number
Title
Author
A sentence or two explaining how the book addresses the indicator

Example:
E1-1.5    Analyze the effect of the author’s craft (including tone and
the use of imagery, flashback, foreshadowing, symbolism, irony, and
allusion) on the meaning of literary texts.
* Firestorm by David Klass – 2006. There are many references to classic
literature and mythology throughout this book. Allusions include
Ecclesiastes, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Cassandra from Greek
mythology
, Moses and the burning bush, Scylla and Charybdis.
