Strive for $25 — we are not alone!

Look at what Texas school librarians are being asked to do. Should we share our strategies?

2008 SCASL Annual Conference

Plans are underway for the 2008 SCASL Annual Conference!

Have you done something this year that went really well…is there something you’d like to share with others? If so, consider submitting an application to present a concurrent session or an Exploratorium session at the 2008 SCASL Annual Conference! Download an application here or get one at the SCASL website. Application deadline is August 17, 2007.

This year’s theme is Power Up @ your library. We’ll be at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center again (this time with a parking garage and a new hotel!). Mark your calendars for March 12-14, 2008.

I look forward to hearing from many of you!

Is there anything at NECC for you?

NECC
Just in case you think the ISTE and NECC are not relevant to school librarians, think again. Doug Johnson, Director of Media and Technology for the Mankato Public Schools, has posted a slew of sessions from the 2007 NECC Program that are directly related to media and school libraries. Read what he has publicized as being directly for media specialists by clicking here. Visit the NECC site to see for yourself. It’s in Atlanta this year, and that really is just a short drive for most of us. I’ll be there, and hope to see some other fellow SC lms’s attending too. It is such a shame that NECC and ALA overlap this year since both are a reasonable distance for us here in SC. NECC is June 24-27. Anyone interested in going?

Now here’s a thought–a spin on library awards

This came through my Bloglines today from the feeds off School Library Journal–the naming of the library media program of the year! Read about it here. As I was cruising the links, I was pleasantly surprised to see the elementary schoolmedia specialist has a banner displayed in his library that proclaims he offers a Blue Ribbon School Media Program. In reading more, I discovered that this is an annual award–and not necessarily awarding the media specialist as it is awarding the program. Interesting. It showers the attention on more than one library program a year, which I think is good, as well. Is it something we might consider? Cost might be a banner. But it keeps the attention on the program (which directly is the patrons of the program) rather than the person implementing or directing it. It could be a way to recognize more successful programs in our state organization. Perhaps this one could be nominated by someone other than the school level folks…maybe perhaps by district level folks or media coordinaters for a district? I wouldn’t want it to take away from our prestigious Media Specialist of the Year, but rather be an addendum to the awards program. Maybe we could even streamline it to be a recognition of an elementary, middle, or high school, and specialized school library. Any thoughts??
